Yoga May Help to Prevent Bunion Pain

A common foot condition that develops in the front of the foot is known as a bunion. It appears as a large bump on the side of the big toe, and it can be uncomfortable while wearing shoes. Additionally, large bunions can push the second toe into the toe next to it, and this can be a result of changing foot structure. Bunions can develop due to genetics, or from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. An effective yoga pose that can keep the foot strong is known as downward dog. This is done by keeping the hands and feet flat on the floor while extending the lower torso into the air. Additionally, the toes can be strengthened by performing a seated forward bend. If you would like more information about what stretches and yoga poses can benefit bunions, please consult with a podiatrist.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Canonsburg Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

It is considered to be a common injury in active children, and may worsen when pressure is exerted on the affected area. Stress fractures can happen as a result of repetitive stress that is endured by the feet from participating in running and jumping activities. Children who have fragile bones or vitamin deficiencies may be prone to developing stress fractures. Common symptoms may include bones in the feet that are painful to touch, and swelling. If your child has pain in their feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat stress fractures.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Canonsburg and McMurray, PA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

The heel can become inflamed, which can cause severe pain and discomfort. Mild relief may be found when the activity that caused the injury is temporarily stopped, and walking patterns may be changed. It may help to wear custom made orthotics if Sever’s disease is severe, and some patients find it necessary to take pain medication. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

There are many conditions that can cause this type of damage, including diabetic neuropathy, physical trauma or injuries, tarsal tunnel syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and certain infections. If you have burning heel pain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist. A podiatrist can help diagnose the cause of your pain and find the right treatment for you.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Excess Weight May Cause Flat Feet in Children

Being overweight or obese can put excess strain on the feet. This is true for both adults and children. The feet support the weight of the whole body. The greater that weight, the more added pressure is put on the feet. This added weight may lead to the development of flat feet, a condition in which the foot lies flat on the ground while standing. All babies are born with flat feet and the arch develops during childhood. On average, obese and overweight children appear to have flatter arches than those who aren't overweight. Flat feet may cause foot pain and discomfort. If your child complains of foot pain, it is recommended that you take them to see a podiatrist, who can treat this condition.

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Canonsburg Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.
